Box Elder Bugs
Box elder bugs are black insects with distinctive red markings measuring about 1/2 inch in length, easily identified by their elongated bodies and three prominent red stripes. These true bugs are commonly found on box elder, maple, and ash trees during summer, becoming problematic in fall when they congregate in large numbers on warm, sunny sides of buildings. Box elder bugs enter structures to overwinter and can become a significant nuisance due to their swarming behavior and foul odor when crushed. Control involves sealing entry points, removing host trees when possible, and applying exterior treatments during fall congregation periods.
